Study and assignment related questions

It's easier to study together

Assignments are easily completed and submitted directly on the Virtual Campus. As you complete an assignment, you can save your work and continue at a later stage.

No, all assignments are completed on the Virtual Campus.

Each assignment has a set due date. These due dates are available in the study calendar you received upon registration and are also updated in your calendar on the Virtual Campus.

You will receive a mark of 0 for the first attempt of the assignment.

    • Each module has a formative assignment. The purpose of formative assignments is to test your knowledge of the content of the modules. You have multiple attempts to complete the formative assignments until the due date. This allows you to review the study material as you test your knowledge.
    • Each subject has a summative assignment. Summative assignments test your understanding and ability to apply the concepts and theory of the relevant subject. Some modules are also subjects. For example, each module has a summative assignment for the Higher Certificate and Advanced Diploma qualifications. Summative assignments are longer and more in-depth tasks and will take longer to complete than formative assignments. Summative assignments may include essays, projects, and some research.
    • In the Diploma and Higher Certificate qualifications, each year ends with Final Integrated Summative Assignments (FISA) to test your knowledge, understanding, application and integration of the various subjects. This is a long assignment and will take some time to complete.
    • The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component is an integrated research project in the final year of the NQF 6 diploma. The project or assignment will be based on current developments in the field of study to ensure that learning is relevant. The WIL tasks are usually issued at the beginning of the academic year, and you will work on this project throughout your final year. You will receive detailed information on the project or assignment when it needs to be completed. Your lecturer will also request regular updates on your progress with the WIL assignment.
    • The Research Report on the Advanced Diploma replaces the FISA and prepares you for postgraduate studies. The Research Project consists of a theoretical component and a practical component. The practical component consists of a topic submission, proposal and the final research report. The standard duration for the Research Report is six months.
    • You need to achieve 50% or more to pass an assignment.
    • Panel Interviews are conducted at the end of or during every qualification.

Yes, there are no exams. The “no exams, assignments only” method allows you to complete your accredited studies at your own pace, even if you work full time or have other responsibilities. All your assessments are completed online through tasks, projects and reports. Several verification checks are built in to ensure the authenticity of your work, including the final panel interview at the end of your studies.

The minimum period for each qualification is listed on each qualification’s page.

In summary:

  • The Higher Certificate is a one-year qualification (120 credits).
  • The NQF 6 Diplomas are three-year qualifications (360 credits).
  • The NQF 7 Advanced Diplomas are one-year qualifications (120 credits).

NOTE: You have the option to complete the research report while completing the modules (one year), or you can complete the research report after completing the modules (eighteen months).

Yes, you can gain access to a qualification through RPL. You can also use RPL to achieve a qualification partially. To do this, you must prove that you have obtained all the knowledge, skills and aptitude described in a qualification. Your work and portfolio will be assessed against all the standards and outcomes of the nominated qualification. RPL is an extensive and expensive exercise that can take as long or longer than completing the qualification normally. To apply for RPL, don’t hesitate to contact the College.

Electronic copies of most of the prescribed textbooks are available on the Virtual Campus. In summary:

  • Higher Certificate – all prescribed textbooks are available on the VC.
  • Diploma in Business Management – only one textbook is not available on the VC and is only needed in the second and third year (the same textbook).
