BMT College FAQ: Study and Assignment
Assignments are easily completed and submitted directly on the Virtual Campus.
No, all assignments are completed and submitted on the Virtual Campus.
Each assignment has a set due date. These due dates are available in the study calendar you received upon registration and are also updated in your study calendar on the Virtual Campus.
Assignments must be completed and submitted on the Virtual Campus on or before the due date.
You will receive a mark of 0 and fail the first attempt of the assignment. You will then have to wait for the second attempt assignment to become available and submit it on or before its due date.
Please note: Your study fees include a first and second attempt on all summative-type assignments.
Third attempts are not automatically granted or available. You will need to apply for and submit a special appeal to the Academic Council for any third attempt.
NOTE: There is an administrative cost to Academic Council applications. In addition, the Academic Council may also charge additional penalties.
- Each module has a formative assignment. The purpose of formative assignments is to test your knowledge of the content of the modules. You have multiple attempts to complete the formative assignments until the due date. This allows you to review the study material as you test your knowledge.
- Each subject has a summative assignment. Summative assignments test your understanding and ability to apply the concepts and theory of the relevant subject. Some modules are also subjects. For example, each module has a summative assignment for the Higher Certificate and Advanced Diploma qualifications. Summative assignments are longer and more in-depth tasks. Summative assignments may include essays, projects, and some research.
- In the Diploma and Higher Certificate qualifications, each year ends with Final Integrated Summative Assignments (FISA) to test your knowledge, understanding, application and integration of the various subjects.
- The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component is an integrated research project in the final year of the NQF 6 diploma. The project or assignment will be based on current developments in the field of study to ensure that learning is relevant. The WIL tasks are usually issued at the beginning of the academic year, and you will work on this project throughout your final year. You will receive detailed information on the project or assignment when it needs to be completed. Your lecturer will also request regular updates on your progress with the WIL assignment.
- The Research Report on the Advanced Diploma replaces the FISA and prepares you for postgraduate studies. The Research Project consists of a theoretical component and a practical component. The practical component consists of a topic submission, proposal and the final research report. The standard duration for the Research Report is six months.
- You need to achieve 50% or more to pass an assignment.
- Panel Interviews, security checks, plagiarism checks, and verification checks are conducted to ensure the authenticity of all submitted assignments.
The minimum duration for each qualification is provided on its respective program page. Here’s a quick overview:
- Higher Certificate: Typically a one-year programme (120 credits).
- NQF Level 6 Diplomas: Three-year programmes (360 credits).
- NQF Level 7 Advanced Diplomas: One-year programmes (120 credits).
Note: For Advanced Diplomas, you have the flexibility to complete the research report while working on your modules (allowing completion in one year) or after completing your modules (up to 18 months total).
Yes, you can either apply for RPL to access a qualification, or, you can apply for RPL to obtain a qualification.
RPL allows you to receive credit for prior knowledge, skills, and experience by demonstrating that you meet the qualifications’ specific standards and outcomes. This process involves a thorough assessment of your work experience and portfolio.
Please note: RPL is a detailed, intensive and costly process, sometimes taking as long as, but usually longer than, completing the qualification through the regular study process. RPL also does not mean you will do no assignments or study work. If there is no evidence in your experience for specific outcomes, you will need to study and complete those missing components.
If you are interested in applying for RPL, feel free to contact the College for more information.
