Diploma in Business Management 1st Year

Quickly start your Diploma in Business Management 1st year journey, knowing you can switch to the Human Resources diploma after the first year. This year will provide a firm foundation in Management Principles, Business Administration, and Entrepreneurship – key subjects that solidify your understanding of business management and administration principles and practices. This initial year comprises eight concise modules, each with a multiple-choice assignment. There are four comprehensive assignments to be completed before the due dates. There are no exams!

Diploma in Business Management 1st Year Subjects and Modules

Subject: Management Principles

The three-module Management Principles subject covers Introduction to Management, Planning and Organising, and Leadership, giving you the fundamental knowledge and skills you need to excel as a future leader and manager. Learn how to establish a business, embrace entrepreneurship, and create an effective business plan through strategic planning, organising, leading, and control.

This module provides an introduction to the pivotal role businesses play in society. It also covers the fundamental management functions – planning, leading, organising, and controlling – as well as the skills and competencies required at various levels of management to ensure business success.

Strategic planning and resource organisation are integral components of effective management. In this module, we delve into the essence of planning as a pivotal management function and highlight its significance as the initial step in the management process. Additionally, we explore the establishment and utilisation of objectives and different levels of plans within an organisation and introduce the eight-step planning process. 

This module covers the essential management function of leadership to enhance your understanding and appreciation of this critical aspect of management. We introduce you to the diverse bases of power, the roles and qualities of influential leaders and explore various leadership approaches; including trait-, behavioural-, situational-, and contingency theories. 

Subject: Business Administration

Explore the subject of Business Administration through three modules: Intro to Business Administration, Risk Management and Financial Management. These modules are designed to empower you with practical skills and a deep understanding of the administration function in business.

Learn how to set and achieve objectives, evaluate risk, and navigate the world of financial management. Gain invaluable skills in financial accounting, statement analysis, and business calculations.

The administrative function serves other business functions within an organization, including Human Resources (HR), marketing, and finance. It provides crucial information required for making strategic decisions.

In this module, we will cover the topic of risk and its levels, as well as risk management and its benefits. We will also explore the different areas of risk management, as well as introduce you to various types of risks, risk categories, and the different processes involved in risk assessment and evaluation.

The “Financial management for non-financial managers” module. This module aims to introduce you to financial management from a secondary or supportive perspective. Essentially, this module helps you understand financial management and its concepts when you do not work in the financial department, for example, IT, human resources, marketing, or the legal department.

Subject: Entrepreneurship

The final subject of the first year guides you on discovering the world of entrepreneurship. The two modules explore essential business concepts and crucial entrepreneurial skills and processes. The subject covers product development, pricing strategies, promotion and advertising. You can learn how to identify viable business ideas and understand important managerial aspects, including operations, finance, and human resources.

Learn the basics of marketing management in this module. Discover how marketing management works in different organisations and explore the marketing process. Understand how to collect, analyse, and interpret marketing information to effectively target and communicate with consumers. Dive into the elements of the marketing mix and learn how to develop a simple marketing strategy.

This module introduces you to the fundamentals of marketing management. It investigates the nature and the function of marketing management within various types of organisations. Furthermore, the marketing process is introduced in this module as well as the components of the marketing environment.

1st Year Payment Plans

First Year

Ease into the Diploma in Business Management, with the option to change your learning pathway to Human Resource Management after the first year. 
The first year consists of eight modules with a multiple-choice assignment each.

The second year of the Diploma in Business Management introduces you to the core business management functional areas: human resources, marketing, operations, and financial management. 
Each of the eight modules consists of a multiple-choice assignment. Four longer format assignments are completed at your own pace before the due dates to ensure your access to the third and final year.

Third Year

The third and final year is the last step in achieving this sought-after qualification. As a BMT College Diploma in Business Management graduate, you will also automatically qualify for the Advanced Diploma in Business Management (NQF level 7). 
The final year consists of eight multiple-choice assignments, four longer format assignments and a project.
